Winter in the Delaware Valley can be bone chilling and often people want to resort to foods that provide comfort. But that comfort doesn't need to come in the form of unhealthy foods. There are a number of delicious, healthy options that thrive in the winter. Check out the foods below that will keep you eating the rainbow and help fend off the wintertime blues!

  • OATMEAL - Fuel-up at breakfast with a warm bowl of oatmeal. Oatmeal is high in zinc and is essential for proper immune function plus, it has soluble fiber that is associated with a healthy heart.
  • KALE - Kale, and dark leafy greens in general, is rich in vitamins A, C and K. You can use kale as the base for a salad or mix it into a fruit smoothie. One added winter benefit for kale is that a winter frost can take away any bitterness often associated with it.
  • LEGUMES - Legumes such as kidney, garbanzo, pinto and black beans are rich in fiber and protein can be added to soups and stews during the wintertime to provide a hearty or meaty taste.
  • WINTER SQUASH - Winter squashes such as butternut, acorn and spaghetti are high in vitamins A and C and are also a good source of vitamins B6 and K, potassium and folate. An added benefit is that they are low in calories so eat up!
  • SUSHI: SPICY TUNA AND SALMON - When you make a sushi run don't forget to order spicy tuna and salmon as they provide vitamin D. With limited exposure to the sun during the winter months, foods like these can help prevent vitamin D deficiency that is associated with impaired growth and weakening of bones.
