Braves lose replay challenge in eighth vs. Padres

SAN DIEGO -- After Andrelton Simmons employed a questionable safety squeeze bunt during the eighth inning of Saturday night's 12-inning loss to the Padres, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez attempted to help his shortstop by challenging that Evan Gattis was not given a path to the plate.
Once Gonzalez challenged that Padres catcher Rene Rivera had unnecessarily blocked the plate while receiving first baseman Yonder Alonso's throw, the umpires reviewed the play and quickly determined hat Rivera had not done anything prohibited by the collision rule and the out was confirmed.
Knowing there was confusion surrounding a similar play the Reds reviewed during Thursday's controversial win over the Marlins, Gonzalez figured he had to at least try to challenge with the hope of getting a ruling that would have accounted for a go-ahead run.
"I'm just going to throw it out there after watching some of the stuff that is going on," Gonzalez said. "I was just thinking, 'Why not at that stage of the game?'"
Gattis hesitated on the bunt and was at least 10 feet from the plate when Rivera received the throw. The replay showed Rivera tagged a sliding Gattis in front of the plate.
