ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Braves will honor former third baseman Chipper Jones on Friday, June 28 by inducting him into the Braves Hall of Fame and retiring his uniform number. The induction will take place at a special luncheon at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis and the uniform number retirement will occur in a pre-game ceremony that night before the Braves take on the Arizona Diamondbacks.
"Chipper was a Brave from the beginning to the end of his career and his legacy will forever live in our record books," said Atlanta Braves President John Schuerholz. "There is no greater honor that we can bestow upon him than to induct him into our Hall of Fame and retire his iconic number 10."
Jones' number 10 will fittingly be the 10th Braves uniform number to be retired, joining Hank Aaron (44), Eddie Mathews (41), Dale Murphy (3), Phil Niekro (35), Warren Spahn (21), Greg Maddux (31), Tom Glavine (47), Bobby Cox (6) and John Smoltz (29). The Braves also retired the number 42 along with all Major League Baseball teams to honor Jackie Robinson.
Larry Wayne Jones, Jr. was selected by the Braves as the first overall pick in the 1990 free agent draft and spent 19 years in the Majors.
He won the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1999, the National League Batting title in 2008 (with a .364 average), was an eight-time National League All-Star, a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner and the only switch hitter in MLB history to own a .300 career batting average and hit at least 300 home runs. Jones ranks first in over 11 categories in Atlanta Braves history (since 1966) and is second in seven statistical categories in franchise history.
Jones will join Hank Aaron, Bill Bartholomay, Lew Burdette, Skip Caray, Bobby Cox, Del Crandall, Ralph Garr, Tom Glavine, Tommy Holmes, Ernie Johnson, David Justice, Herman Long, Bill Lucas, Greg Maddux, Eddie Mathews, Dale Murphy, Kid Nichols, Phil Niekro, John Sain, John Smoltz, Paul Snyder, Warren Spahn, Ted Turner, and Pete Van Wieren in the Braves Hall of Fame.
Tickets will be available for the June 28 game beginning on Monday, February 25 at www.braves.com/tickets, the Braves ticket office at Turner Field, by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000, or at any Ticketmaster outlet.
