Bourn did a pretty good job of that in the Braves' 10-3 victory over the Cubs. He went 1-for-3 with two walks, three runs scored and a three-run triple in the fifth inning that gave the Braves a 4-3 lead, from which they never looked back.
With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the fifth, Bourn came to the plate against Cubs starter Chris Volstad. He lined a first-pitch fastball into the right-field corner and raced around the bases to easily reach third for his fifth triple of the year.
"[I was] looking for a pitch to hit," Bourn said. "I just saw it pretty good coming out of his hand and ended up turning on it."
Bourn's big game came on the same day as third baseman Chipper Jones' selection to the National League All-Star team as a replacement for injured Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp. Jones had been leading the Final Vote balloting before being selected as Kemp's replacement. He said he was glad he made the team Tuesday so Braves fans would have time to vote for Bourn.
"Mike Bourn has been our most valuable player this year," Jones said. "He has jump-started our offense time and time again. When he came over to shake my hand to congratulate me, I told him he was coming with. ... So we've got to get him there."
When early voting results were released Tuesday afternoon, Bourn was in last place. He trailed Cardinals third baseman David Freese, Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper and Diamondbacks second baseman Aaron Hill. Bourn knows he needs a comeback before voting closes at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday.
"I don't know, that's going to be hard," Bourn said. "That's a pretty good race. We'll see what happens."
