Glaus, Kawakami boost Braves over Bucs

Slugger hits RBI single, starter tosses two shutout frames

at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Thursday, March 4

Pirates at the plate: Andy LaRoche lifted a Juan Abreu pitch over the left-field wall in the seventh inning for his first home run of the spring. Bobby Crosby's third-inning RBI single against Jo-Jo Reyes accounted for Pittsburgh's other run.

Braves at the plate: Troy Glaus bounced back from Wednesday's hitless season debut with a first-inning RBI single that scored Nate McLouth, who had drawn a four-pitch walk and then stole second base. Brooks Conrad had two hits and provided the difference with his two-run double in the fourth inning.

Pirates on the mound: Former Brave Charlie Morton, who was traded to Pittsburgh in June, pitched around three walks and limited the Braves to one hit and one run in three innings. Brad Lincoln, who is bidding for a bullpen spot and has an outside shot to begin the season as the fifth starter, allowed two hits and recorded a strikeout in one scoreless inning.

Braves on the mound: Providing a regular supply of two-seam fastballs, Kenshin Kawakami limited the Pirates to one hit in two scoreless innings. Kawakami recorded a strikeout and threw 12 of his 17 pitches for strikes. James Parr enjoyed a successful season debut, working two scoreless innings that included a pair of strikeouts.

Worth noting: Chipper Jones drew a pair of walks and grounded into two double plays during his first four plate appearances of the spring. But the veteran third baseman exited Thursday afternoon's game on a positive note after delivering a fifth-inning single.

Grapefruit League records: Pirates 0-2; Braves 2-1

Up next: The Braves will host the Nationals at Disney on Friday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. ET. Derek Lowe will begin his preparations for his Opening Day assignment with a two-inning stint. But much of the afternoon's pitching focus will be placed on closer Billy Wagner and setup man Takashi Saito, two key offseason acquisitions who will be making their first appearances of the exhibition season.
