Atlanta pitcher Horacio Ramirez added to 2003 USA Baseball Olympic Qualifying Team Trials roster
USA Baseball, in coordination with Major League Baseball, made a substitution today to the 31-player roster currently attending the 2003 USA Baseball Olympic Qualifying Team Trials in Phoenix, Arizona.
Left-handed pitcher Horacio Ramirez of the Atlanta Braves was added to the roster and will report on Monday, October 13. He replaces fellow left-handed pitcher Cole Hamels of the Philadelphia Phillies, who was unable to attend the trials due to back spasms he began to suffer while attending the Phillies Instructional League.
Ramirez, a native of Inglewood, California, spent the entire 2003 season with the National League East Champion Atlanta Braves. He was 12-4 with a 4.00 ERA in 29 starts overall, and 3-0 with a 2.41 ERA in his five starts during September, to help the Braves win their 12th consecutive division title.
The 23-year-old Ramirez became eligible for selection by USA Baseball when he was optioned to Triple-A Richmond on August 31. Ramirez was later added to the Braves postseason roster as a replacement for disabled pitcher Paul Byrd.
The Team USA trials roster may add additional players prior to and during the trials process and the final 24-player roster, which will travel to Panama, will be announced on Friday, October 24.
