Rockies recall RHP Chris Volstad from Triple-A Colorado Springs
Club designates OF Eric Young Jr. for assignment
DENVER - The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Chris Volstad from Triple-A Colorado Springs. To make room on the active roster, the Rockies have designated outfielder Eric Young Jr. for assignment. Volstad (#31) will be available for tonight's game vs. Washington (6:40 p.m. MDT) at Coors Field.
Volstad, 26, opened the season in the bullpen on the Rockies Opening Day roster and posted no record with an 8.53 ERA (6.1 ip, 6 er), 1 walk and 3 strikeouts in 4 games before being optioned to Triple-A on April 19. In 9 appearances, including 8 starts for Colorado Springs this year, Volstad has gone 3-1 with a 5.31 ERA (40.2 ip, 24 er), 14 walks and 16 strikeouts. In 128 career Major League games/123 starts, the former first round pick is 35-51 with a 4.90 ERA (701.2 ip, 382 er), 248 walks and 442 strikeouts over six seasons.
Young, 28, made his second consecutive Rockies Opening Day roster this year and appeared in 57 games this season, including 32 starts in the outfield. He has batted .242 (40-for-165) with 9 doubles, 3 triples, 1 home run, 6 RBI and 22 runs along with 8 stolen bases. The New Jersey native has a career .261 average (200-for-766) with 26 doubles, 9 triples, 6 home runs, 40 RBI, 125 runs and 70 stolen bases in 313 Major League games.
The Rockies currently have 38 players on the 40-man roster.
