Braves recall Carlyle, option Acosta

Cox expects right-hander to return after rosters expand

08/27/09 7:51 PM ET

ATLANTA -- The Braves attempted to fortify their bullpen on Thursday, when they recalled Buddy Carlyle and optioned Manny Acosta to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Carlyle, who hasn't been part of the Atlanta bullpen since being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on June 5, went 3-1 with a 1.76 ERA in 12 appearances for Gwinnett this past month. During the 15 1/3 innings he completed within this span, the 31-year-old right-hander registered 24 strikeouts and issued just one walk.

"He's been lights out down there for the most part," Braves manager Bobby Cox said.

Acosta, who surrendered a two-run homer during the seventh inning of Wednesday night's 12-5 loss to the Padres, posted a 4.32 ERA in the 31 appearances he made for Atlanta this year. Cox said the 28-year-old right-hander would likely return to the Majors after the rosters are expanded in September.
