ATLANTA -- Elmer Dessens' latest attempt to prove he can still pitch in the Majors was disappointing. But the veteran right-hander, who essentially remained idle throughout September with the Braves, is still holding out hope for another chance.

Dessens filed for free agency on Tuesday, becoming the sixth Braves player to do so since the World Series ended last week.

Tom Glavine, who doesn't know if he'll be able to return from season-ending elbow surgery he underwent in August, is the only eligible Braves player who has yet to file for free agency.

The pitching-starved Braves signed Dessens on Aug. 27 with the hope that he'd continue the success he enjoyed this year in the Mexican League. But in four appearances, with his last coming on Sept. 13, the 37-year-old veteran posted a 22.50 ERA and allowed opponents to compile a .500 batting average with a .538 on-base percentage.

Dessens joined the Mexican League after being released by the Pirates during Spring Training this year. He has gone 48-62 with a 4.56 ERA in 360 career Major League appearances.
