NEW YORK -- The Braves have placed Casey Kotchman on the bereavement list and recalled outfielder Brandon Jones from Triple-A Richmond to assume his roster spot.

After Tuesday night's loss to the Mets at Shea Stadium, Kotchman learned that his mother had suffered an undisclosed medical issue. The 25-year-old first baseman traveled to be with her and other family members at a St. Petersburg-area hospital.

"We're just saying that she's very ill," said Braves manager Bobby Cox, who received a call from Kotchman around midnight after Tuesday's game.

Major League Baseball's bereavement list rules state that a player must remain on the list for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven days.

If Kotchman needs more time, the Braves can apply for him to prolong his stay on the bereavement list.

Kotchman was acquired via a July 29 trade that sent Mark Teixeira to the Angels.

Jones provides some much-needed depth for the Braves, who currently have 13 pitchers on their 25-man roster. The 24-year-old outfielder has hit .260 with eight homers and 52 RBIs in 95 games with Triple-A Richmond this season. In 16 games with Atlanta earlier this year, he hit .278 with a homer and five doubles.
