ATLANTA -- Jo-Jo Reyes gets another chance in the series opener against the Mets in New York on Tuesday night.

The Braves want to start seeing results, not just promise.

"I like Jo-Jo," Atlanta manager Bobby Cox said. "But, dang, there comes a time when you've got to be in charge on the mound."

Reyes lost his last five decisions with the Braves before being sent down to Triple-A Richmond.

The rookie left-hander made three starts with the International League team, posting a 3.94 ERA. He walked eight in 16 innings, which is not a good sign.

Cox wants to see Reyes throwing the ball over the plate and challenging hitters.

"He better be throwing strikes," Cox said when asked about what he expected from Reyes.

"That little hump, sometimes it's hard to get over it," the manager added. "But he will."

Reyes, who has never faced the Mets, was sent down to Richmond after a rough outing in Philadelphia on July 27. He had an 8.74 ERA in his final six outings and opponents hit .354.

The 23-year-old has a 5.33 season ERA in 16 games -- 15 of them starts. He has given up 92 hits and 38 walks in 82 2/3 innings, with 64 strikeouts.

Pitching matchup
ATL: LHP Jo-Jo Reyes (3-9, 5.33 ERA)
Reyes has proven he can be effective at the Triple-A level, having gone 1-1 with a 2.31 ERA in eight starts for Richmond this year. But when the 23-year-old southpaw is brought back up to make this start, he'll have to show the consistent control that he lacked in 15 starts for the Braves earlier this year. In his past six big league appearances (five starts), opponents produced a .451 on-base percentage.

NYM: LHP Oliver Perez (9-7, 3.91 ERA)
Perez continued to impress with his last outing, a three-run, eight-strikeout affair. The left-hander tossed 6 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball before tiring and allowing three Nationals to score, cueing his exit from the game. The New York bullpen held up, though, and Perez got more than enough run support in a 9-3 victory.

Tidbits
The Braves haven't faced the Mets since late May, when they swept a four-game series at Turner Field. Atlanta leads the series 7-2, going 6-0 at home and 1-2 at Shea Stadium. ... Reliever Rafael Soriano, on the DL with a sore elbow, has been set back by the flu. ... Outfielder Matt Diaz had his ailing knee re-examined. He had to end a rehab stint at Richmond last week.
