Diaz goes deep, but Braves fall
Outfielder hits second spring homer, drives in two for Atlanta

Thursday, March 9 Braves at the plate: Yunel Escobar had two singles, a walk and scored a run before he grounded out to shortstop in the seventh inning, marking his first out of the spring. Matt Diaz had two hits, including a solo home run off Jamie Shields in the eighth, and two RBIs. Diaz's homer was his second of the spring. Jonathan Schuerholz had a single and walked twice. Devil Rays at the plate: Damon Hollins doubled and scored Tampa Bay's first run in the fifth inning, then he drove home the Rays' third run with a single in the sixth. Toby Hall went 2-for-2 with an RBI single, and Travis Lee had an RBI double. Joey Gathright stole two bases in the sixth en route to scoring a run. After starting 0-for-11, Sean Burroughs got his first hit of the spring, an opposite-field single in the seventh, but he got thrown out trying to score on B.J. Upton's double. Elijah Dukes raised his average to .500 (4-for-8) with an eighth-inning single. Russ Branyan raised his average to .400 (4-for-10) when he followed with a single. Braves on the mound: Tim Hudson made his second start of the spring, and he held the Rays scoreless for three innings while allowing two hits and one walk. Hudson struck out two. Lance Cormier pitched one scoreless inning, striking out one. Sean White gave up three earned runs in two innings in his first outing of the spring. Devil Rays on the mound: Seth McClung made his second start of the spring, and he still has not allowed a run. The right-hander pitched three innings, allowing two hits and two walks. McClung struck out two. Chad Orvella, who is in the hunt to become Tampa Bay's closer, pitched one perfect inning. Grapefruit League records: Devil Rays 5-3; Braves 3-5-1. Up next: The Devil Rays will host the Blue Jays on Friday in a 1:05 p.m. ET contest at Progress Energy Park at Al Lang Stadium. Right-hander Edwin Jackson will start for the Rays, and he will be followed by left-hander Mark Malaska and right-handers Tim Corcoran, Shawn Camp, Brian Stokes, Chad Harville and Travis Driskill. The Braves will travel to Winter Haven, Fla., to play the Indians on Friday at 1:05 p.m. ET. Right-hander John Smoltz will start for the Atlanta, and he will be followed by right-handers Wes Obermueller and Anthony Lerew and left-handers Mike Remlinger and John Foster.
