Can it really be true? The answer is yes, 2018 will be the 50th season of Kansas City Royals Baseball. The 'Boys in Blue' first took the field at Municipal Stadium at 22nd and Brooklyn on April 8, 1969 to start a new chapter in Kansas City's long and rich baseball history. But wait you say, 1969 to 2018, that isn't 50. If we were talking anniversary you would be correct, but the first season counts. Do the math and it all adds up, even if it still seems hard to believe we are about to start season #50.
Who will get the Royals first hit or score the Royals first run in season 50? We'll soon find out and they'll be forever linked to Lou Piniella who notched both that first hit and run scored in the Royals inaugural season of 1969. Whoever it is will need to strike quick if they are to match Lou, who got that first hit on the first pitch he saw as the Royals lead-off hitter in the first inning. The next hitter, Jerry Adair, drove Piniella in with an RBI single. That would be a good bottom of the first inning scenario to repeat on March 29.
The final score would be nice to repeat as well. The first season started with an Opening Day 4-3 win in 12 innings over the Minnesota Twins. So much has sprang forth from that auspicious start for the Royals. Nearly all the proclamations and predictions made for what the franchise could become on that day have come to pass. Even more, all the hopes and dreams the team, its hometown, and its fans had on that day have come true.
We've seen four Rookies of the Year, four Cy Young Award winners and an MVP season for the ages. We've seen the close of an old ballpark that was home to Kansas City baseball for half a century, and the opening of another that is nearing the half century mark itself - still as beautiful and unique as it was on the night it first opened its gates to Royals fans.
Together we've hosted two MLB All-Star Games and shared with the baseball world the special bond Kansas City has with the game. We've watched and listened to Royals legends that earned their way to the hallowed grounds of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. We've said hello and welcomed players and personalities that have become an important part of our collective experience. And we've even come together for a few tearful and heartfelt good-byes.
At its best the baseball brings people together, all kinds of people from all kinds of backgrounds. If you want proof of that you only need to watch what a baseball team chasing a championship does to a city and community of fans. Fortunately for us here in Kansas City, and Royals fans everywhere, we know that feeling. We've lived it, and we want to do it again.
If baseball has a magic to it, and I believe it does, part of it rests in the fact the game and its season have a certain rhythm that those of us who love it find nearly perfectly suited to our daily lives. It comes alive in the spring, thrives in the summer, makes us thankful in the fall, then sleeps all winter only to be rejuvenated enough to start the cycle all over again.
And so the cycle begins anew. I know the first 49 years of Royals Baseball delivered so many great moments, interesting stories and compelling characters that I'm anxious to see what season #50 will bring. Let's get started. Play Ball!
