Jackie Robinson Invitational

The Atlanta Braves and Delta Air Lines continue their partnership to honor the legacy of Jackie Robinson by hosting the 5th Annual Atlanta Braves Jackie Robinson Invitational. The event educates youth baseball and softball players about the impact of Jackie Robinson's achievements and allows teams the opportunity to showcase their talent and compete against other teams.

On Saturday, April 9, 2016, sixteen teams ages 5-12 years old will gather at the Atlanta Braves Baseball Academy located at the Villages at Carver Family YMCA to celebrate Robinson's legacy during this annual tournament.

An exciting Pitch, Hit & Run Skills Challenge showcased throwing, hitting and running skills of the 5-8 year old participants. Congratulations to the following Winners of the Skills Competition:

Golden Arm Pitching Challenge

  • 5-6 Year Old Division Winner – Ryan Hill - Old National Braves
  • 7-8 Year Old Division Winner – Quinton Mitchell - Welcome All Nationals

Home Run Derby

  • 5-6 Year Old Division Winner – Matthew Rentz - Gresham Park Reds
  • 7-8 Year Old Division Winner – Jason Cox - Welcome All Nationals

Fleet Feet Base Running Challenge

  • 5-6 Year Old Division Winner – Justin Murphy - Old National Braves
  • 7-8 Year Old Division Winner – Jayven Mack - College Park Hurricanes
A "Tribute to 42" Art, Essay and Poetry Contest

The youth baseball and softball players also celebrated the legacy of Jackie Robinson by participating in a "Tribute to 42" art, an essay, and poetry contest. The youth were required to select from a list of characteristics embodied by Robinson, and express those characteristics through art, essay, or poetry. Many creative entries were received for this contest and it allowed the kids the opportunity to reflect on Robinson's impact in society and in baseball.

Positive Athlete Award

The Braves and Delta Air Lines also teamed up with Positive Athlete Georgia to award the Male and Female Positive Athlete of the tournament. These athletes were nominated by their coaches for being a positive role model both on and off the field. Congratulations to Sarah Banks of the Shiloh Avengers and Chase Boines of the Sandtown Red Sox!
