On Saturday, April 14, the Atlanta Braves hosted the inaugural Atlanta Braves Jackie Robinson Baseball Invitational presented by Delta Air Lines at the Braves Baseball Academy at the Villages of Carver Family YMCA. To honor the legacy of Mr. Robinson and commemorate the 65th anniversary of Mr. Robinson breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball, the Braves invited 16 youth baseball teams from the Atlanta metropolitan area to participate in a daylong round-robin tournament. The participating teams enjoyed a great day of baseball and had the opportunity to meet Jesse Simms, grandson of Jackie Robinson, and Braves outfielder Michael Bourn.
Jesse Simms, grandson of Jackie Robinson, and Braves centerfielder Michael Bourn came out to show their support for the tournament. Each team was given the opportunity to take a team photo with Bourn and Simms. Immediately following the team photos, Simms tossed out a ceremonial pitch to Bourn. They each gave brief remarks about Jackie Robinson, baseball and encouraged the players to enjoy their time playing baseball with their friends. When play resumed, the champions of each division were determined and presented with their championship trophies.
Sunday, April 15, 2012 marked the 65th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball and each player on every Major League team wore Mr. Robinson's famous "42" on their jerseys. Braves players proudly wore their "42" jerseys as they hosted the Milwaukee Brewers that afternoon. All participants in the Jackie Robinson Baseball Invitational received complimentary tickets to Sunday's game, and each team was represented in an on-field ceremony prior to the game.
The event provided a great weekend of baseball and education for the participating teams and their families. The Atlanta Braves are committed to carrying on the legacy of Jackie Robinson and growing the sport of baseball among the youth in Atlanta. All of the players who participated in this memorable weekend honored Mr. Robinson with their level of play and their love for the game.
